Mr. Kitty's Quest is a short and quirky adventure game from the creator of The Moonkeeper, one of my favorite independent games of the last couple of years. In it, you must guide the titular cat on his quest to win the affections of his disdainful owner by hunting down the most unobtainable gallon of milk in the world. The story is a uniformly tongue-in-cheek affair; there isn't a lot of dialogue, but it's clever in a terse sort of way.

The game has sort of an RPG/adventure feeling to it, but in general the emphasis is more on action than story. The game is a simple top-down mouse-and-WASD shooter, and unlike most adventure games there's not a puzzle to be found. It's fortunate, then, that the action sequences are well done. There's a generous variety of enemies given the game's length (seven or eight varieties over its forty minutes or so), and they're far from carbon copies of one another. And that's not counting the game's two boss battles, which are both interesting even if only one of them (unfortunately the first) is actually challenging. On that note, the game's only real flaw is its difficulty curve, which is mostly more of a plateau with sort of a drop-off near the end. It's not really a hard game in general, though.

The graphics and music were done by a variety of artists, but they fit together surprisingly well, and the overall vibe is something like a top-down Cave Story. Muted yet colorful palettes and catchy, robustly arranged chiptunes abound. There are a few rough edges to some of the tilesets (quite literally - it seems like maybe there were some corner tiles missing) but this mostly just enhances the game's amateur charm. Like its action sequences, the game's environments are admirably varied, distinct and attractive.

Overall, Mr. Kitty's Quest is a fun romp - perhaps forgettable, perhaps shallow, but humorously written, compellingly designed, soundly programmed, and in general a varied and enjoyable relief from the slew of games that try to stretch a few elements as far as they can go.

There is one puzzle inside the house of the witch. It is a very easy one though
