Fractal Fighter is a good example of how engaging effects can be used to transform a simple concept into a satisfying game. As a fast-paced arcade shooter, Fractal Fighter's simple gameplay and visuals are both made up for in polish and pure fun.

With an arsenal of only three weapons, each having their merits, you must destroy the enemy in each level, taking down its weapon layers one by one. As the levels progress, so do the enemy's complexities; each stage you will find more and more self-similar objects protruding from the machine, hence the game's title.

The polish on the effects are really what make this game shine. The sounds, particles, and rumble effects make destroying the enemy piece-by-piece a very fulfilling experience. The music fits well with the fast pace of the game, yet it is subtle enough that it doesn't get in your way.

The only thing I would add to this game is more diversity in the enemies. While they do increase in complexity, they do not create too many surprises. The game might also be more rewarding if it put more emphasis on your score by providing you with upgrades. But despite what it lacks, Fractal Fighter still shows to be a simple yet enjoyable game that everyone should play.

Author's Description

The game's your average stylish bossfight bullet hell shmup, with a scoring system that puts focus on combos. It's a fairly gentle one, with a rather friendly start for the beginners, although it gets a bit difficult at the last few bosses (there are ten in total, as well as the optional randomly generated bosses). The player is allowed to choose how many lives he'll have, but the scoring will drop the more lives you select.

The controls are generally pretty simple. Use Z to fire your machine guns, and X to shoot a laser that goes through anything, but has a lower damage/fire rate. You can also use C to find nearest hostile unit of the enemy's current active weapon layer. There is a trick to this though, if you align with the crosshair that shows up and press C again when you hear a little beep, you'll shoot out a few homing missiles. Enter and arrow keys to navigate the menu and to move the ship.

I like this game a lot.
Reminds me of the bosses in Varia.

I liked this game much more than Kairuga. But then, why Kairuga was praised as highly as it was is still beyond me.

As for Fractal Fighter, though--there is really nothing to complain about. The graphics are cool, the gameplay is solid, the sound is effective, and the overall level of quality is high. Perhaps the only bad thing that could be said is that nothing in particular really stands out about the game--besides the graphics, but their novelty fades pretty quickly.

Otherwise, it's very nicely done.

The game is really good, but no, it's nothing like Mushihime-sama. Mushihime-sama is insane. Plus the graphics are much better. This is more like Castle Shikigami 2 on a good day. The graphics and effects aren't as good as Kairuga, but it has a nice simplicity to it. That, combined with the breathtaking patterns formed by the designs and the challenging but addicting gameplay make this game amazing. We should all take a lesson from this game. Cactus has achieved what most of us strive for.

Very well done (to say the least), but still not perfect. 9/10
