AstroMoonDoom is a platform game with an astronaut theme that was put together in three hours. In some ways, the haste with which it was made is evident, but on the whole it is a rather charming game.

You play as a little astronaut whose ship has crashed on the moon, and you help him on his quest to find... a new ship. Don't ask me why there is another, fully functional, ship on the moon somewhere. And while you're at it, don't ask me why there are bats and Masticating Moon Monsters (I made this name up; they're not really called that but I'm sure you'll know them when you see them) on the moon either.

Anyway. The game is quite fast-paced, not least because of the somewhat excessive gravity (I thought the moon had less gravity). It is also quite short. In terms of gameplay it has no real frills, but no real flaws either.

The part of the game that really grabs me is the simple, pixellated graphics. They remind me a bit of the games of Messhof, and they're nice in a way I can't really put my finger on. Somehow, in a small game in a small window, they manage to conjure up some sort of Lunar Vastness. I don't know exactly why, but they're very cool, and I enjoy the simple little animations too, especially the aforementioned Moon Monsters. There's a minor graphical glitch with tiles at the edge of each room, though - I suspect it has to do with the game being made in three hours. The music has a somewhat different mood from the graphics (it's more in the hyperactive MIDI vein) but I guess it's good too.

Oh, and here are the controls, which you might find helpful in the face of the game's crushing lack of documentation:

The arrow keys.
Enter to spawn a space-man.
And press... something, in front of the little "S" blocks, if you want to save. I could never quite figure out what it was. S? Down? Enter? So I just pressed them all every time, and somehow my game got saved. You can do this too.

Anyhow, this game is not very impressive in a lot of ways, but it is well made in its essentials and there is something I find unique and pleasant about it; maybe you'll find that too.

I don't think QOG has noticed it yet, but there is a glitch in the game I found. It's not very obvious, though.
Nice game!

I didn't notice you had reviewed this since it wasn't on the front page...
Yeah, you don't have to press anything by the stones, they save automatically whenever you walk past. Glad you enjoyed the game!
