If Jumper is a maladjusted child who pushes people down in the sandbox and takes the legs off of insects, MicroPacifist is that child's demented drug-addicted cousin. Which is to say, both are needlessly challenging platform games, but MicroPacifist takes things in a decidedly trippier and more unfriendly sort of direction.

The gameplay is, as stated above, needlessly challenging, and also not very different from that of most of the author's other games. The character moves quickly, the gravity is absurdly high, the spikes and enemies are all over the place; any mistake means instant death. The level design is dumbly, straightforwardly brutal; you only have one move in your arsenal, after all, which is to jump over stuff. There aren't many levels, and there certainly isn't much variety. Chances are, you'll hate this game, but I bet you'll keep playing it, at least for a while. Want to know why?

Okay, I'll tell you why. It's the graphics. Maybe you're one of those people who is not very impressed by graphics (a Dwarf Fortress player?), but if you're like me at all, you'll be impressed by the graphics in this game. Each room consists simply of spikes, blocks, the player, enemies, and the exit. Each has quite a simple shape - merely a few, huge pixels. However, the image for every object is constantly fluctuating - in shape and in color - as if the entire screen is about to come flying apart. And then, every time you die... well, I won't spoil it, except to say that something pretty awesome happens. In general, I find great appeal in the game's simple but psychedelic and glitchy aesthetic. It's worth mentioning that the prettiness makes the game one of the laggiest I've ever encountered, but some of the levels are only beatable with the help of the lag, so I'm not complaining.

I am also fond of the music; it mirrors the glitchiness of the graphics, and its buried melody, wall of noise, and lack of rhythm suit the game's inhospitable atmosphere. I'd even listen to it on its own, but that's just how I am.

In short, MicroPacifist is a success in terms of how it looks and sounds, but its gameplay is a pure rehashing of a genre I never had much patience for in the first place, and it simply adds in the areas of the genre that I don't really like (i.e. difficulty and lack of variety in game mechanics). Still - it's soundly and attractively put together, and certainly worth a look, especially if you think more of hardcore platformers than I do.

Yeah, I played this. I found the transitions to be a little laggy, and the difficulty spike obsurdly high... interesting, though
