Game Maker Games - A Game for Three Year Olds

Review by Jabberwock
A Game For Three Year Olds is, I suppose, aptly titled. The experience of playing the game is a little bit similar to talking with a small child in that you've kind of got to suspend the rules of reason for it to make any sense, and even then it's not really making "sense" in the traditional sense. Does that make sense?

In a way, it is an exploration game. But it more involves the exploration of possibilities than of locations - in fact, the whole game takes place in a single room. The graphics are mostly bright and sketchy-looking, like a little kid's crayon scribblings, with a few mismatched particle effects thrown in (I'm not sure why they're there, but it kind of fits the game). I like the way the game looks, though I can't say the same for the sound. Fortunately, most computers these days come with this handy little thing called a volume control.

I don't really want to go into what the gameplay entails too much, because ruining the surprise is, in this case, ruining the fun. Basically, it's a game where you make things. But it's more analogous to, say, a guy who has never taken a chemistry class throwing volatile stuff into a bottle to see what happens than anything else. In order to get anywhere, you've got to try unorthodox things, which might not always (or ever) make sense. And often the results are just as unexpected and delightful as what you had to do to achieve them.

I guess if trying strange, nonsensical things just to see what happens doesn't sound like fun to you, you probably ought to skip this game altogether. But if you're like me, you'll find that this game is fun in the most exquisite way. It seems to offer endless fascinating and strange possibilities; it knocks on the door of that part of my brain where the little kid I once was still resides (I forget about him a lot, but he's there), and asks him to come outside and play. That's a good thing.

K. I've found a lot of stuff now... can't think of anything else... but 28 is a good amount of objects if that IS everything...

What most people seem not to get is that the point of this game is that it has no point.

If you try and beat it, you are playing it wrong.

I've not played this yet, but I will try.

Now a review.

I didn't play the game for very long, but all the bizarre fun stuff you can do, made it really cool.

I liked the green guy who ate the flower spores a lot, too...

Hmm, if the staff gave this a 7.3 my games should all get at least 9, there just seemed to be no point in playing this game for more than a couple of minutes. Sorry I just don't see the reason for it.

1) to deathmastergames, I didn't make this game.

2) to cranegames, a game can't 'hog' the spotlight... a new spotlight game is chosen once at the beginning of each month.

I saw some really low ratings, and some high ones. I in particular thought this game is hogging the spotlight, and should let another game in. I found this boring, the sounds were random, and this game probably would not be allowed on the market, due to the high amount of flashing objects.

Overall, I didn't think this was thrilling. 6/10.

Well, yes, I probably have lost a lot of touch with my childhood. I am in my twenties... Anyway, I don't mind some fun for the sake of fun, but I'm not even sure that's what this game is. It's just random experimentation, and for the most part, I don't even know how to play. It's not like I'm the only one rating this game low. I think there are a lot of people who would have liked to rate it 0, just like there are a lot of people who rate it very highly.

There seem to be two groups here; one that loves childhood fun, and one that has come to expect a more challenging game. We just share oppinions. I don't mean to be rude, but you're going to have to accept the fact that some people like your game, and some people don't consider it a game at all.

When are you gonna make games not just play with yourself on the keyboard?

If the little kid in you wanted to give it a high rating, why didn't you? If you have lost all touch with your own childhood, you must be a very boring adult. Since when did objectivelessness, fun for the sake of fun, become a bad thing?

Please, read the review before you senselessly bash a decent game. Jabberwock clearly states that 'if trying strange, nonsensical things just to see what happens doesn't sound like fun to you, you probably ought to skip this game altogether.'

I suggest you take his advice, rather than discourage people from downloading a game they may find highly enjoyable.

Oh dear, dear God. I wasn't even going to comment on this game when I first played it, until I realized it got game of the month. The child in me wanted to give it 5-10, but the adult in me wanted to give it a 0. Unfortunately, I'm an adult. The game makes no particular sense, you can't win, as far as I can tell, and there's no real objective to it. In that sense, I'm not sure you can even call it a game. I have no idea how a game like this can get into the spotlight, let alone have a decent review. It's original, all right, but it isn't exactly good. On a website for 10-year-olds, this could be gold. But I just can't bring myself to rate it that high. I'm sorry.

For three year olds? I inconnently downloaded this game for a four year old and it's too bad for a four year old. A game that starts up with shooting innconent birds that blow up is NOT for three year olds. A one only because there is no zero or negatives.

Just for clarification, I don't have anything against the game itself--I think it's a highly unique concept entertainingly executed. But after I got to a certain point, I couldn't figure out anything else to do, and there was nothing to compel me to play beyond that.

I think, had the game been just a little less open and a little more directed, I would have enjoyed it more. I need something other than completely random experimentation to compel me--especially when I've been trying to make something happen for the past ten minutes or so, and nothing will work.

Yup. That's for 3 year olds all right.

It was amusing for a while, but it's not as good as some people claim it to be. The main flaw, I think, is that there simply isn't enough to do. If there was more to experiment with, the 7.3 rating might have been justified. As it stands, though, after ten minutes you'll probably have already discovered everything, and after that there's nothing to do but play the game again--without any of the sense of discovery you get from playing it the first time.

Wow....uhhh.. did i miss sumthing?? Iz it really that all u have to do is clik the birds and they blow up?? if so i honestly cant believe this game got a spotlight...on the other hand i feel really stupid that i didnt make a game equally as simple and submit it. Anyhow congrats to the maker(sorry i didnt note your name on the last screen and they dont seem to have it on the comment screen) on making the spotlight.

If u plan on making a sequel(somewhat sarcastic),please fix the fact that u are cliking on the birds with your pinky finger instead of your index in the game, small and somewhat stupid i suppose, but it bugged me.

Yes, you did miss something. It's called right clicking. Try it sometime. And, it is an index finger. A left index finger.

Anyway, for those complaining that it's just not great, here's the deal: there are tons of shoot-em-ups and rpgs in the world. And, what do they do? Rely on doing the same thing over and over again to score points, slightly varying each time. Shoot the enemy, shoot the enemy, shoot the enemy! The concepts been done a thousand times. This game is different in that it is unique and intresting; something you don't get often. If you seriously play it, it'll stick in your mind a little, as compared to other shallow games whose name you won't remember in a month.

Just try to relax and play. I don't claim this to be a highly actionous fast paced shooter. It's something different; and that's how I designed it.

Thanks for the spotlight, by the way! :D

Even if, the concept of games is to shoot the enemy; I'm sure FAR over half would choose those them over this. I guess the three year-olds you know must be on acid.

It's something you need a certain amount of patience to appreciate. I don't think you actually found everything if you only played for ten minutes; after half an hour I was still finding new things.

In any case, the reason this did well in the contest and was chosen for the spotlight is that it is a very unique game that we think people should try. They might find it extremely entertaining, or they might (like many of you) find it pointless, but either way it's something unique.

Just because the art resembles something a 3 year old can make doesn't mean the game itself is for 3 year children. If people are looking for games for younger children I would suggest they go visit: http://www.computotgames.com/ I'm not going to review this game, since it's just a joke (a 4 for being for kids).

It's sad that Kafei can actually make good games, but instead he makes games like this; Which are nothing more than a cheesy inside joke.

Only MP3s and Wavs...

Inside jokes? Eh? Besides the fact I got this idea from someone asking for a game that would be suitable for three year olds, there's not much of an inside joke into this. I didn't make this to be an inside joke, but for fun. It's not a joke.

I own a 3 CD set of the music band The Doors, performing live at the Boston Arena in 1970. There’s a word in the CD booklet from the band's guitarist, Robby Krieger, about the much controversial singer: “He couldn't be that far gone. Maybe he was only pretending to be f**ked up. Was he doing it for the effect? No, that's just Jim, and that's why people loved to take that chance -- the possibility of seeing an awful show on the off-chance they might witness magic!'

I find this quote suitable for some of the creators of experimental and abstract games. Read the quote again, replacing “Jim” by “Kafei” and see if you agree with me. Playing this game, or any other game by the same author, is like taking the risk Robby describes. In every game Kafeithekeaton has to offer, there is something very unique but the possibility that someone doesn’t like the outcome is there. While I may not have witnessed magic in A Game for Three Year Olds, I found it interesting and intriguing to dig through. And just like the band’s double concert, the result was non-traditional and quite original, but it wasn’t awful, at least not from an artistic point of view. Then again, Jim was admittedly very drunk that night.
