Out of the many Game Maker games I've played, The Pyramid is one of only a handful that I can say does basically everything right. It blends beautiful graphics and flawless sound with good old-fashioned retro gameplay, and the result is one of the most entertaining games I've played in a long time.

In The Pyramid, you play as an adventurer armed with a laser gun and encased in a protective bubble. You must guide him through a wide variety of monster-infested rooms in order to find the treasure hidden in the depths of an ancient pyramid. Within each room, your goal is to blast away at the assorted monsters until the pyramid's guardian grants you a crystal, which can in turn be used to open a barrier and move on to the next room. In concept it's extremely simple, but I guess the beauty of this and games like it is that it manages to be a lot of fun anyway. It's pure arcadey action, and it's almost disturbing how much time you can spend playing it. The coding is practically flawless; I've not run into a single error that I can think of in the hours I've spent playing this game. There is a total of 140 different rooms and just as many monsters, and even without dying it'll take you plenty of runs to find them all. This adds an element of discovery and replayability that I think all games ought to have. There are several different control setups and a myriad of customizable options besides this, so there's really very little to complain about in terms of variety. Also, there's an online highscore table, which is always an improvement.

As with all of Pug Fugly's games, the graphics are dazzling and professional. The monsters range from ghosts and insects to robots and aliens; they all move quite convincingly and are a lot of fun to watch (my personal favorites would have to be the mummies). Besides the monsters, there are many backgrounds and various aesthetic features, like spiderwebs and statues, in the game's many rooms, and there's plenty of typical Fuglian eye-candy (particle and lighting effects, etc.). The only part of the graphics I didn't particularly like was the pyramid guardian, which was a little rough-looking and didn't seem to quite fit with the rest of the sprites.

The sound is of excellent quality, and though there are only a few sound effects, all of which are repeated to no end, they're unassuming enough not to get on your nerves. The music is also quite well-done, but I sort of would've prefered something more minor-key and mysterious.

Do I really need to say any more? There are few games out there that can boast this much polish, this much variety, and this much fun, and you'd be making a big mistake to pass it up.

Am I the only one who thinks this is really really boring? I mean, sure, the graphics and the amount of work that seems to be put into this game is amazing! It looks very professional. You have one flaw, it's as boring as heck! That's the key thing in games. But lots of people are blind to gameplay recently (this can be compared to the fact that people will choose graphics (ps3) over fun (wii)) Maybe people feel they need to rate it will because the graphics are great, sounds are great, music.. whatever, and it's bugless! Cool! Alrighty! It's a shame it's really boring. I just move around and hold a key down. Ohhh, fun. Not to mention all the enemies are basically the same except changed graphics and movement. I only found one enemy that even shoots at you. It was extremely hard for me to just get through the game once (not because of difficulty but because of boredom). The only thing that kept me going was to see the end. Ooh.. plus whatever points. No one cares about points, sorry. Nice try though, I suggest taking this game and changing the way it's played.

Awesome game! It has a lot similarities to my favorite arcade games. Very well done, expecially the graphics design. The music was fitting, although the first one got on my nerves after a while. It's a bit repetitive, and whiny, but that's ok too. The triangles in the intro flash too many colours, and could almost give me a seizure. Plus I hated having to go through the starting rooms again and again to visit every lower room. Maybe there could be a warp to skip over pre-visited rooms. Not only that, I was most disappointed to see nothing happened when I beat each room and got 100%. But still, very well done.

I liked the game, and thought it was very well done. I had a few minor complaints, though. I know it's hard to make over a hundred different types of enemies, but most of them were quite similar when it came to their behaviour. I also thought that the gameplay stuck to a pretty simplistic formula, some power-ups and tweaks to make the gameplay less repetitive would've been warmly welcomed.

Still. The graphics are consistent and of high quality. The selection of levels and enemies are enormous, if a bit repetitive content wise. The customization is incredible and so is the polish. So, I'd give you a high grade anyways :)

This game is really great!!
I loved all of the different monsters and it was really surprizing to drop the first diamond down on the bloking zappy stuff and not have it go away. (you need more than one for harder levels)
The graphics were very clean (I liked the wizards and mummies.) I don't know about the sound because this computer doesn't have any. The only thing I don't like about this game is the main menu. It was sort-of distracting and hard to see the words. Other than that it is a very nice game with a good polish.
I give it a 7.8/10.
