Game Maker Games - Taco

Taco is a short and (in terms of gameplay) rather generic platform shooter; what sets it apart is the quirky sense of humor with which it's presented.

The game has some vestiges of a story, but it's mostly nonsensical and random. As this is presumably done on purpose, I don't see it as a problem, but it might bother some players. In any case, the story, such as it is, centers around Taco, a yellow guy with a gun who somehow finds himself standing between hordes of vengeful undead and the people of his city. Why, you ask? You'll have to play to find out.

The game engine has one or two flaws (for instance, colliding with an enemy only sometimes kills you), but for the most part it does its job, if unimpressively. You run and jump through a series of fairly generic levels, shooting everything that moves and sliding across floors with a notable lack of friction. The game is not very difficult or long, either; it might entertain you for half an hour or so. Overall, the gameplay is reminiscent of Evac & Rescue- not great, but functional, at the very least. Fortunately, the lackluster gameplay is more than made up for by the game's wacky sense of humor and amusing graphics.

The graphics are fairly simple, but have a certain charming, cartoonish uniqueness to them that fits perfectly with the game's strange humor. There's plenty of the unexpected and random present in every room, from portraits on castle walls to billboards outside of buildings (my favorites being a series of advertisements for 'Fred's Apartments').

The music and sound aren't very memorable, but they're pleasant enough. They're not really one of the game's stronger points, however.

If you're looking for a short, pleasant and none too difficult platformer, and you have an offbeat sense of humor, you'll probably enjoy this game. It's nothing amazing, but it's good fun while it lasts.

Whoever who shall not like this game, must ye be sacrificed, for surely this game be awesome!

I had a bit of a problem with the Tofu boss and falling through the Lava. But you're supposed to, right?

(P.S. the closing movie didn't work for me, so I had to just watch it...)

Infection for kids!

Yes, that is what Taco comes across as. WIth the same fun, slipper controls and amazingly tight aiming, Taco is one hell of a play. Without all the kid-deterring gore.

But Taco has a few...uh...cracks...in his shell. First of all, the games bosses are incredibly easy and quick to beat (hey Erik Leppen...just hold down the mouse button), and the platforming sections are amusing at best. The ads in the Freds Apartments section are excellent, though, and I love when you get to rush to Taco's aid as Stink. E. Fat Guy. Don't ask.

Play.

I like the sense of humour which is used in the game and I found no real bugs. However there is very few help and I didn't get past the first 'boss' because I didn't know what to do. After about five to ten minutes, I stopped. Interface is a bit frustrating, the intro can't be skipped and pressing Escape exits the game instantly. Not a bad game, but nothing special.

It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great. It was a sort of mix between the two that I like to call 'grad'.

'grad' is about 7/10.

I would stab myself 40-odd times just to play this game again.
