Review by Quimp
The Curse of Kaumaha is a spacey, held-back style of platformer, with a great exploration aim in its core. The original concept takes place on an island, buried deep in the folds of the Pacific Ocean, smitten with a curse. You are the only one who can break the curse of Kaumaha by freeing spirits and collecting masks.

To start with, the graphics are simply outstanding; the look is distinct and very professional. The game combines a sharp cartoonist style to a detailed pixel art. The effects are splendid, well made and diversified; the same characteristics can also be applied to the enemies and the colourful level designs. From a quick look, you can easily tell there is something mysterious on the island. In terms of visual quality, I can count the number of Game Maker games with such variety and impressive graphics on my fingers, with many of them ranging behind The Curse of Kaumaha. What's even more rad than the look, is how everything connects together in a theme exploited with originality.

As far as the gameplay goes, it’s inevitable that several players will completely morph into the game, while others will quit playing after a short session. As said previously, the platformer uses a calm, mellow approach. There certainly is action, although its degree is restricted to the game type: The Curse is simply not the kind of game I would play if I wanted to have a quick action blast. Instead of the typical “kill your enemies” idea, the game developer decided to use an interesting alternative, which can be summarized as “free your enemies’ spirit”. In any case, this doesn’t mean the game is tedious. On the opposite, I have been playing the game non-stop for days, and I plan on continuing my quest in the next weeks.

To emphasis the game’s orientation even more, the creator opted for separated and long levels that are not linked together directly. This allowed him to additionally set the player’s focus on individual goals, such as collecting the lost golden mask in each island portion. As with any adventure game, the long levels can however become irritating in the long run, especially in this case where one bad move can lead you to instant death. Don’t let this put you down though. It fairly annoyed me at first, but the more I play the game, the more I enjoy the concept. Nevertheless, this can lead to a certain degree of frustration.

- Everything surrounding the heart of the game has been incredibly well thought out (theme, minigames, unlockables, secrets, multiple options, etc.);
- In my opinion, one of the best platform adventure game made with GM;
- Outstanding graphics.

- Occasionnal and minor bugs encounters;
- Repetitive gameplay for certain players;
- Although it fits the game like a glove, the background music becomes cyclic after a while.

In short
To some fans of the well-known game Seiklus, playing The Curse of Kaumaha will bring memories of the long hours spent exploring as the white Seiklus character. This game may not appeal to everyone, but I’m definitively hooked. I would say "Three thumbs up," but I only have two.

An almost perfect game in my opinion!
The music gets too repetetive after playing too long, but most of the time, I didn't even notice because I was too much into the game. It could be because its type is my favorite... The levels, gameplay, and creativity are amazing. Even more brilliant is the graphics. Overall, I could see this being as good as most commercial games. I would give it a 9.5, but, following the typical rules of math, it's rounded up to 10.

this(and dim) are two of my favorite games on this website in that they both beat me silly god knows how many times, but I came back for more and stumbled upon the true beauty and complexity they had to offer. Only one problem: I got 20 masks and the fourth portal won't open. I went through them as follows: the first level, wawahi current, and kohonu crack. I think I was supposed to go to pilika depths third, though, and now it doesn't do anything.

Nah. Jumper is plain 'avoid stuff.' This is 'avoid stuff, burn stuff, solve puzzles.'

No I didn't :P Sorry, I guess I just don't really like this type of game. It's quite a lot like Jumper in some places, and I don't really like Jumper either.

Don't nobody flame me for disliking Jumper :)

The graphics were very nice, but I found the gameplay very dull.
The action was too slow for an action platformer and the puzzles were too dull for a puzzle platformer.
Exploring the game was tedious.

The music was okay and the graphics were good, but the gameplay really let this one down in my opinion.

I'll give this one a 7.

One of the best games I have played in a long time. Other than the somewhat repetitive music, it is flawless.

WOW! What an amazing game. This game is one of the most professional games I have seen, it is like something nintendo would release. The only thing it needs is a help file for the controls. ( they are easy to figure out )
